What was your initial reaction to the Whitney identity system after reading the first article?

My initial reaction to the Whitney reading was intrigued. I ended up reading it multiple times because I was a tad confused reading it the first time. I think that the simple clean W is a very successful logo. it’s very recognizable and easy to connect it to a brand.

In your own words, describe what responsive design is. What are the pros and cons of applying responsive design to an identity system?

To me, responsive design is something that everyone can either relate to, understand, or connect to in some way. In my opinion the pros are that if everyone can understand or relate to something, they’re more likely to be involved or take part in it, whether it’s food, clothing, or whatever it may be.

The new Whitney identity has been criticized as boring and duplicitous due its simplistic, open-ended design. Do you agree or disagree — why? Are boring and simple one in the same?

I think that sometimes a simple design is better. I think in some of cases less is more. The new design is clean and modern, and I think it’s really successful. Boring and simple are not the same thing in my opinion. I think simple designs can be really successful, whether it’s a clean modern look, or using a lot of negative space. Boring in my opinion is when there’s no interesting elements in a design, and the font isn’t successful.
